Here's a word that gets thrown around way too much in our industry: simulation. There are about as many ways to describe a learning simulation as there are vendors to build them. Here's our take on the concept.

Whenever we are talking about simulations, we like to start by quoting Shakespeare and saying, “A rose by any other name.” For as long as this term has been around in the e-learning industry, it's been called many, many different things. They all mean the same thing. They are talking about a rich, high-end e-learning experience where rules and probabilities control what people will be doing in the game, what they will have access to, and that the users’ decisions are going to change their experiences.

The other thing that's important about what simulations can do is to make sure that it's behavioral based. It should simulate what people are going to be doing on their job, regardless of what it is. Often when you're building a simulation, you have to step back and say, this seems like a very knowledge-based or very conceptual idea, what do you actually want them to do? We had a large client who came to us for an orientation course and as we talked we asked, "Why are we here? Why do you think you need a performance-based approach to this?"

They said it’s because, when they meet people--whether its socially or whether people come from the outside or even meeting colleagues in the inside of this corporation--they literally can't have a meaningful conversation about what the organization does. That's the behavior. Have a meaningful conversation with these different people. That is what you need in order to start to build this simulation, and then around that you build an experience that changes based on what the user brings to the table.
