Is it just me or is society shifting toward an entirely butler-based world these days? Think about it. At the push of a button you can have a black car at your door, a crate of carefully curated organic groceries, a container to pack your home in, a dog walker, babysitter, feng shui expert, even a world-class doctor on demand at any time of day. It feels fancy and luxurious and it’s the ultimate one-way consumer experience because you don’t have to spend any time at all thinking or caring about these things. They just are.
SO WHERE’S THE UBER UNICORN OF E-LEARNING DEVELOPMENT?
The truth is that this on-demand service model simply doesn’t work in every industry. There is no button you can push that will deliver jaw-dropping e-learning to your doorstep at the moment you need it most. Believe me, if there was, we would be all over that technology like hot butter on a fresh biscuit.
I know that deep in the inner workings of your heart you already know this magical service doesn’t exist. But we are a people of hope and Harry Potter. It’s why you craft carefully worded RFPs and conduct exhaustive vendor searches to find the right vendor. So that maybe, just maybe, you will find the one, that majestic but not-quite-magical custom e-learning developer that will disappear for a few weeks and return to your door with a fully functioning completed course that accomplishes all of your learning objectives and dreams.
DON’T GET ME WRONG. WE ARE THE ONE.
I mean, we’re really, really good at delivering your dream solution. But the catch is, we can’t do it without you. Your work doesn’t stop when we start. You can’t kick back and wait for your e-learning course to arrive. We need you to sit up and pay attention and care. Care about each and every deliverable we send you. Care about the deadlines we set together. Care about the tone of the course, the look and feel, the way that drag and drop works, learner feedback, stakeholder input, the look on that character’s face, the color of the menu button, and even the period at the end of that sentence.
Care about all of it, not only because your learners deserve that level of care and attention, but because your developer cares a whole lot. Behavior-changing courseware isn’t built by great developers working away behind the mysterious Wizard of Oz curtain. In fact, please pay a great deal of attention to the men and women behind the curtain, because great e-learning requires your care and attention. Now let's say it one more time, with feeling: care about the courseware you're developing. Your learners will know, and the outcomes will prove it.
