Who are you?
The questions we ask are not only, “What did you do in your last job? What made you want to leave?” We ask about, well, you. Who are you now? Where do you want to be? Learning whether someone has traveled, climbed a mountain, or completed a triathlon can sometimes tell you more about a person than whether he or she achieved employee of the month. We have a conversation that leads to discovery, asking things like “How do you cope with obstacles?” We ask the candidates to show us how they are flexible and how they react to change. As the e-learning we create for our clients is unique and customized, so is our process for finding great talent.
We promote NogginLabs as "smart, nice & funny" (kinda in that order), so when it comes to finding employees to create content for our clients, we also want them to have these qualities, no matter where in the four pillars we are recruiting: instructional design, content production, graphic design, or programming.
You need to be smart
We are not necessarily only looking for “book, 800 on the SAT" smart. We need our employees to possess intelligence that lets them to see the big picture, anticipate client needs, and adapt to the ever-changing environment inherent in custom e-learning development. Sure, being smart within the technical scope of the job requirements is important. But if a candidate can meet all the basic requirements and master a Rubik’s cube in less than 90 seconds? That’s pretty awesome too.
You must be nice
Nice is a more difficult characteristic to gauge in the recruiting process. We do rely on referrals from existing employees, which alleviates some of the pressure to find just the right candidate. "Nice" also supports the team structure of our company. We require employees to not only be professional and kind, but also to have the ability to make those around them want to be better, achieve more. Be stronger.

Funny doesn’t hurt
A lesser-known quality we look for is funny. Never underestimate the value of humor. We aren't looking for obvious “funny," but employees who have the ability to find the positive side of any situation, who turn what seems hopeless into something manageable. We seek good energy in potential employees. Humor and comedy can make teams stronger, happier, and more productive. It doesn't mean we only hire comedians, it just means we find humor and funny to be important facets of a personality. We look at how candidates answer questions in the interview. How is their attitude in general? Do they have positive energy?
