Thanks for the Lecture
As of yesterday it’s officially fall, and even though I’m no longer in school, I think this season will always feel like the beginning of the year to me. Back to school
I guess the closest thing we have in the adult world to Back to School time is starting a new job. New colleagues, a new office, new responsibilities...and hopefully enough training to at least get you going. Read more »

The Kids are All Right
Last year, my team got to work on a financial literacy platform for teens. It involved nine separate modules on financial topics as well as a 3D game, in which learners take three characters through a year of their lives and help them make financial decisions.

Four-eyes and the Frustrations
A little while ago I decided to try contact lenses. I’m not terribly squeamish, so I figured sticking little pieces of plastic into my eyes would be no sweat. Then came the moment at the optometrist’s office, when the little piece of plastic was placed onto the tip of my finger. Read more »

Birthday Observation
As a shop, we're thinking more and more about how to intelligently incorporate social media in our courseware. It’s pervasive, powerful, and we (amongst others!) have found that it can be leveraged to create a more engaging learning experience.

Billy the (Wall Street) Kid
The gold standard (in my mind, at least) of truly engaging training is whether anybody would want to take it in their free time. Is your training engaging enough that a reasonable human being could possibly be motivated to, say, crack open a canned beverage and mess around with it from the couch over the weekend? Read more »

Locally-grown e-learning
There are certain types of work that lend themselves well to outsourcing. Even certain types of e-learning projects can fall into this category. I can’t imagine what we do, though, coming out of any other environment than our four orange and yellow walls. Read more »

Expectation failure
We talk about expectation failure a lot around here, and we tend to build it into our instructional design because it’s a great way to encourage learning. When what we experience goes against our previously-held perception (i.e. our expectations fail to come true), we refine our expectations and, tada! Learning occurs! Read more »
